The Mental Health Council of the Big Bend (MHCBB) was formed in 2015 to assess
the mental health needs in the Big Bend region, identify areas of concern in the
community and recommend strategies for improvement.
The group provides a forum for mental health providers, scholars and advocates
to address mental health needs. The group examined data from four specifically
commissioned surveys and with expert consensus from group members,
developed action plans to move the region forward. MHCBB is the only entity in
Leon County comprised of mental health subject matter experts and stakeholders
dedicated to assessing mental health services in the Big Bend.
THE STATE OF MENTAL HEALTH
Our goal is to assess the full spectrum of mental health needs in the Big Bend Region, identify areas of concern in our community and recommend strategies for improvement in those areas.
THE UNITED STATES

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that between 13% and 20% – one in five – of American children and adolescents aged three through 17 have a diagnosable mental, emotional or behavioral disorder.
FLORIDA
According to Mental Health America, 2.9 million adults in Florida, or 17.49% of the state’s population, have experienced mental illness, ranking Florida first in the nation for this statistic. However, more than half of these adults do not receive treatment, and Florida has the third-highest state prevalence of untreated mental illness.

LEON COUNTY

Leon County ranks 20th among Florida’s 67 counties in overall health outcomes. 26% of respondents to the 2019 Community Health Needs Assessment who indicated they had a doctor-diagnosed health issue said they had mental health problems such as depression or anxiety.
